Biography

More interested in repair than disruption. Slow looking, slow fashion, slow travel. I value the handmade and books that take a long time to write. I am the author of three books that took a long time to write! Pearl: Nature’s Perfect Gem (Reaktion Books, 2022), Silver (Reaktion Books, 2017), and Knowledge is Pleasure: Florence Ayscough in Shanghai (Hong Kong University Press, 2012). My writing has appeared in Orion, the Washington Post, China Today, the Cimarron Review, and many other publications. I was born in Wales, grew up in Scotland, and spent my nomadic adult life in Shanghai and rural China, Britain, and the United States. I have a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and have taught at the University of Wales, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, the University of Minnesota, Sino-British College, Shanghai, and Chapman University, Orange, CA. I have received fellowships from Schlesinger Library, Harvard Radcliff Institute, and Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library.
